We’ve had very different experiences with our weight and navigating weight loss over the course of our lives. But our stories started to converge as we closed in on our 50th birthdays.
Belly weight that seemed to happen overnight. The usual tools and tricks to manage extra pounds no longer working. A lot of confusion and frustration.
Sound familiar?
The bad news? There is no magic diet, supplement, or eating pattern.
The good news? We’re learning what does work for us and are seeing sustained results.
Achieving Sustained Weight Loss
In the last 18 months, Michelle has lost 20 lbs. More importantly she’s sustained her weight loss and never feels hungry or deprived.
I’ve lost 2.5 lbs. in the last 50 days. And like Michelle, I’ve achieved this by eating in a way that I know I can, and want to continue for the rest of my life.
What are we doing?
Nothing sexy. It’s really been about getting back to basics.
And while our respective toolkits are different, the keys to our success have been the same:
Our relationship with food needed fixing.
We needed to understand why we were eating and re-learn our hunger cues. This is a work in progress.
We needed new goals.
How we eat is no longer about being skinny and making ourselves small. It’s about being strong and healthy. And our non-scale victories are so much more impactful and motivating: better sleep, more energy, lower blood pressure, and better skin, just to name a few.
Using the bathroom scale wisely.
While the scale is no longer the star tool of our weight-loss efforts, it can be useful when used wisely. Turns out your weight can fluctuate a lot because of things like fatigue, dehydration, and inflammation. And your weight will often go up and down before dropping in earnest.
Our fluid intake was a lot lower than we thought.
Turns out we weren’t drinking as much water and other non-alcoholic beverages as we thought. A little tracking in this area has really helped us be properly hydrated, leading to all kinds of benefits.
We weren’t eating enough.
Yes, that’s right. We weren’t eating enough of the right foods. Leading to overeating of the wrong foods at inopportune times.
Consistency is a superpower.
We’re focused on consistency over perfection and aren’t so easily derailed whenever we veer off course. We’re also being kind to ourselves and getting comfortable with taking up space.
