What you need to know about your menstrual cycle, but never thought to ask

From puberty to perimenopause, many of us navigate our cycles with shockingly little knowledge. For something that happens to roughly half the world’s population for decades of their lives, it’s astounding how little most of us know about menstruation. We treat it like an unwelcome guest, shushing conversations and hiding tampons up our sleeves.

Sure, most of us know how our cycle impacts fertility. But once we’ve hung up our maternity jeans, it’s as if our menstrual cycles vanish from the medical radar. And this gap in our understanding isn’t just missing from doctor’s visits – we’re not talking about it over coffee with friends either.

This hush-hush approach has created a black hole in our collective understanding of women’s health. So when our bodies and hormones start changing (like during perimenopause), we’re left struggling to make sense of what’s going on.

We were well into our forties before we learned the importance of tracking our cycles, not just for fertility, but as a window into our overall health. It’s not just about marking days on a calendar – it’s about noticing patterns in emotions, cognitive function, and physical well-being throughout the month.

So with the hope of helping our daughters, nieces, friends, and even ourselves change our mindset from “ugh, not again” to “let’s see what wisdom you bring this month,” let’s dive in…
